Dr. Richard Porwancher

Board-Certified in Infectious Diseases & Internal Medicine

Dr. Porwancher was previously Chief of Infectious Diseases at Saint Francis Medical Center in Trenton, New Jersey, and Director of the Saint Francis Lyme Disease Center until 2022.


Dr. Porwancher received a Doctor of Medicine degree from Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, completed a residency in internal medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin, and received fellowship training in infectious diseases at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Washington, DC. He is currently Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, NJ and a faculty member in their Division of Allergy, Immunology, and Infectious Diseases.


He provides clinical care for patients with Lyme disease, HIV, and other infectious diseases. He has been awarded multiple grants by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the National Institutes of Health to improve Lyme disease diagnosis and currently holds 2 patents for diagnostic tests for this condition. He has also served as a consultant to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at Fort Collins, Colorado in the field of Lyme disease diagnosis.


Dr. Porwancher has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed medical journals. His research was instrumental in developing the modified 2-tiered laboratory method for diagnosis of Lyme disease.


He is currently a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, and the Infectious Disease Society of America.
